RESUMO

With the deep extension of coal mining in China, fault water inrush has become one of the major disasters threatening the safety production of coal mine. Based on the control equations of steady state and non-Darcy seepage in fractured rock mass, the multi-parameter nonlinear dynamic seepage equations of fractured rock mass are established in this paper. Based on the nonlinear dynamics theory, the function of the state variable in the system is derived, and the influence of the gradual change of non-Darcy flow factors on the structural stability of seepage system is studied. The research achievements show that there are three branches in the equilibrium state of the seepage system. Specifically, the stability of the equilibrium state changes abruptly near the limit parameter. The seepage dynamic system of fractured rock mass has the delayed bifurcation, and the coal mine disaster such as fault water inrush occurs easily at the bifurcation point. The research results are of great significance to enrich the theory of fault water inrush in coal mine, and to reveal the disastrous mechanism of fault water inrush and guide its prevention and control technology in coal mine, which can provide the theoretical reference for predicting the water seepage stability in fractured rock mass.

RESUMO

In the lining of water conveyance tunnels, the expansion joint is susceptible to leakage issues, significantly impacting the long-term safety of tunnel operations. Polyurea is a type of protective coating commonly used on concrete surfaces, offering multiple advantages such as resistance to seepage, erosion, and wear. Polyurea coatings are applied by spraying them onto the surfaces of concrete linings in water conveyance tunnels to seal the expansion joint. These coatings endure prolonged exposure to environmental elements such as water flow erosion, internal and external water pressure, and temperature variations. However, the mechanism of polyurea coating's long-term leakage prevention failure in tunnel operations remains unclear. This study is a field investigation to assess the anti-seepage performance of polyurea coating in a water conveyance tunnel project located in Henan Province, China. The testing apparatus can replicate the anti-seepage conditions experienced in water conveyance tunnels. An indoor accelerated aging test plan was formulated to investigate the degradation regular pattern of the cohesive strength between polyurea coating and concrete substrates. This study specifically examines the combined impacts of temperature, water flow, and water pressure on the performance of cohesive strength. The cohesive strength serves as the metric for predicting the service lifetime based on laboratory aging test data. This analysis aims to evaluate the polyurea coating's cohesive strength on the tunnel lining surface after five years of operation.

RESUMO

Accumulation landslides are prone to occur during the continuous infiltration of heavy rainfall, which seriously threatens the lives and property safety of local residents. In this paper, based on the Green-Ampt (GA) infiltration model, a new slope rainfall infiltration function is derived by combining the effect of air resistance and lateral seepage of saturated zone. Considering that when the soil layer continues to infiltrate after the saturation zone is formed, the air involvement cannot be discharged in time, which delays the infiltration process. Therefore, the influence of air resistance factor in soil pores is added. According to the infiltration characteristics of finite long slope, the lateral seepage of saturated zone is introduced, which makes up for the deficiency that GA model is only applicable to infinite long slope. Finally, based on the seepage characteristics of the previous analysis, the overall shear strength criterion is used to evaluate the stability of the slope. The results show that the safety factor decreases slowly with the increase of size and is inversely correlated with the slope angle and initial moisture content. The time of infiltration at the same depth increases with the increase of size and slope angle, and is inversely correlated with the initial moisture content, but is less affected by rainfall intensity. By comparing with the results of experimental data and other methods, the results of the proposed method are more consistent with the experimental results than other methods.

RESUMO

Seasonal field surveys (April 2018 to February 2019) were conducted in a subterranean estuary (STE) seepage face in Sanggou Bay (China) aiming to explore the transport and reactivity of phosphorus (P) and biogeochemical linkages with the cycling of nitrogen (N) prior to discharge. Porewater dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) together with different fractions of sedimentary P were analyzed in the upper, middle and lower intertidal covering the top 20 cm of sediment (1-4 cm, 5-8 cm, 9-12 cm, 13-16 cm and 17-20 cm depth). The accumulation of sedimentary organic P stimulated the growth of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms and led to porewater DOP enrichment during spring. During summer, total P (TP), porewater DIP and DOP concentrations decreased, potentially due to enhanced mineralization driven by high ambient temperature. From autumn to winter, pelagic organic matter into the STE lowered, triggering a drop of TP standing stocks. Compared with the significant seasonality, sedimentary P storage was statistically identical along the intertidal. Such spatial homogeneity likely results from the rebalance driven by P adsorption dynamics and pelagic organic matter delivered by tide and wave setup. The vertical distribution of DIP, DOP, and sedimentary TP were linked to nitrate transformations. In the sediment layer with active mineralization and nitrification, concentrations of DOP, sedimentary redox and clay P increased. In the layer with active nitrate removal (2-5 cm depth), both DIP and DOP concentrations decreased. The sedimentary loosely-bound and organic P were also lower there. Notably, a substantial quantity of soluble P seeped out, acting as an important contributor to the dissolved P pool of the receiving waters. The spatial and temporal overlap of high concentrations of N and P in STEs adds variabilities and uncertainties in P out-drainage fluxes and nutrient stoichiometry balances, which should draw attention from coastal researchers and stakeholders.

RESUMO

Soil mass balances are used to assess the risk of trace metals that are inadvertently applied with fertilizers into agroecosystems. The accuracy of such balances is limited by leaching rates, as they are difficult to measure. Here, we used monolith lysimeters to precisely determine Cd, Cu, and Zn leaching rates in 2021 and 2022. The large lysimeters (n = 12, 1 m diameter, 1.35 m depth) included one soil type (cambisol, weakly acidic) and distinct cropping systems with three experimental replicates. Stable isotope tracers were applied to determine the direct transfer of these trace metals from the soil surface into the seepage water. The annual leaching rates ranged from 0.04 to 0.30 for Cd, 2.65 to 11.7 for Cu, and 7.27 to 39.0 g (ha a)-1 for Zn. These leaching rates were up to four times higher in the year with several heavy rain periods compared to the dry year. Monthly resolved data revealed that distinct climatic conditions in combination with crop development have a strong impact on trace metal leaching rates. In contrast, fertilization strategy (e.g., conventional vs. organic) had a minor effect on leaching rates. Trace metal leaching rates were up to 10 times smaller than fertilizer inputs and had therefore a minor impact on soil mass balances. This was further confirmed with isotope source tracing that showed that only small fractions of Cd, Cu, and Zn were directly transferred from the soil surface to the leached seepage water within two years (< 0.07 %). A comparison with models that predict Cd leaching rates in the EU suggests that the models overestimate the Cd soil output with seepage water. Hence, monolith lysimeters can help to refine leaching models and thereby also soil mass balances that are used to assess the risk of trace metals inputs with fertilizers.

RESUMO

To obtain the seepage evolution rule and water inrush mechanism of the collapse column, a multi-field coupled mechanical model for water inrush disasters caused by the collapse column is established in this paper, on the basis of the specific engineering conditions of the 1908 working face in the Qianjin coal mine. The mechanical model is composed of internal column elements within the collapse column and surrounding rock masses. The research focuses on the seepage evolution rule in the roof collapse column under different mining conditions and investigates the permeation instability mechanism of collapse column based on the transition of flow state. The research results indicate that the seepage pathway evolves continuously, ultimately forming a channel for water inrush, as the working face advances towards the collapse column. Besides, the water inflow increases rapidly when the working face advances 100 m, then gradually stabilizes, indicating that the seepage channel entry of the collapse column is in a stable stage. Meanwhile, mass loss in the collapse column gradually moves upward. the collapse column remains stable as a whole in the initial stage of water flow, with a small permeability, exhibiting linear flow. As time steps increases, particle loss in collapse column gradually extends to the upper part, forming a stable seepage channel. The flow velocity shows fluctuations with a slow declining trend over time.

RESUMO

Cold seeps are highly productive chemosynthetic ecosystems in the deep-sea environment. Although microbial communities affected by methane seepage have been extensively studied in sediments and seawater, there is a lack of investigation of prokaryotic communities at the surface sediments and bottom seawater. We revealed the effect of methane seepage on co-occurrence networks and ecological niches of prokaryotic communities at the surface sediments and bottom seawater in the Haima cold seep. The results showed that methane seepage could cause the migration of Mn and Ba from the surface sediments to the overlying seawater, altering the elemental distribution at seepage sites (IS) compared with non-seepage sites (NS). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that methane seepage led to closer distances of bacterial communities between surface sediments and bottom seawater. Co-occurrence networks indicated that methane seepage led to more complex interconnections at the surface sediments and bottom seawater. In summary, methane seepage caused bacterial communities in the surface sediments and bottom seawater to become more abundant and structurally complex. This study provides a comprehensive comparison of microbial profiles at the surface sediments and bottom seawater of cold seeps in the South China Sea (SCS), illustrating the impact of seepage on bacterial community dynamics.

RESUMO

Acrylate is a popular polymer grouting material that has been widely used to control groundwater seepage. However, the vulnerability of acrylate slurry to dynamic water washout restricts its application in groundwater environments characterized by high flow velocity and water pressures. In this paper, lithium bentonite (Li-B) was used to modify the traditional magnesium acrylate (AC) grouting material. The influence of Li-B to AC ratios on the modified materials' washout resistance was explored, and the modification mechanism was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Finally, the anti-washout ability of the modified slurry was verified through engineering applications. Results revealed that LiB-AC grout had adjustable setting times (10.5 to 395.6 s), minimal bleeding (0.1%), higher viscosity (65 mPa·s) and expansibility (350%), stronger anti-water dispersibility (24 times that of pure AC slurry), higher mechanical strength (compressive strength is 0.386 MPa, tensile strength is 0.088 MPa), and better impermeability (2.23 × 10-8 m/s). The lithium bentonite was beneficial to the setting time, bleeding, viscosity, slurry retention rate, impermeability, and mechanical strength of the acrylate grout. However, it diminished the expansibility of the acrylate grout. At the optimal acrylate content (20%), the mechanical strength and impermeability of the LiB-AC grout were the highest. The better performance of LiB-AC grout was attributed to the formation of a more stable and dense interlaced spatial network structure after the modification by Li-B. The LiB-AC grout was used in the dynamic water grouting project of a metro shield tunnel segment and achieved better anti-washout performance than cement-water glass and pure AC slurry.

RESUMO

Conduction between the unique geological formation karst collapse pillar (KCP) and the fractures caused by mining in the coal seam floor can lead to catastrophic water inrush disasters in many coalmines in Northern China. It is widely recognized that seepage mutation induced by the migration/loss of KCP fillings (highly broken rocks filling the fractured rocks) happens during occurrence of the KCP-related water inrush. However, roles of fluid path (mining-induced fracture) scale and KCP filling porosity in seepage mutation evolution remain unclear. Here, we conducted seepage tests on natural KCP fillings containing rock particles of different sizes. The filling specimens were deformed to different porosities from 14 to 26% through axial compression, and small to large fluid paths were simulated by seepage plates with distinct pore sizes from 2.5 to 12.5 mm. We found that seepage mutation occurs with significant permeability enhancement by 2 orders of magnitude under a pore diameter of 12.5 mm and a specimen porosity of 26%. There is a strong linear relationship between specimen permeability and Reynolds number (Re) over seepage mutation. The mutation is caused by the sudden collapse of the specimen skeleton and subsequent quick outflow of the particles. Therefore, it is inferred that the KCP-related water inrush is more likely to happen when highly porous KCP fillings are present and mining-induced fractures are well developed.

RESUMO

The backfilling mining method that fills gobs with coal gangue can prevent water inrush hazards, protect groundwater resources, and protect the ecological environment of the mining area. However, initial conditions including the particle size distribution of gangue and the stress environment may affect the seepage characteristics of gangue backfill and inrush prevention ability. Taking the particle size and stress as main controlling factors, the seepage tests were designed for gangue to evaluate influences of the particle size and stress on the void ratio, permeability, and non-Darcian flow factor of gangue. In the meantime, the four stages in dynamic changes of seepage channels were studied and the impervious envelope lines of gangue backfill materials were provided. The results show that the larger the particle sizes, the stronger the crushing resistance of particles; under high stress (> 6.67 MPa), seepage channels in small gangue particles (< 5 mm) change in a more complex manner, and the non-Darcian flow phenomena become more significant. The particle size and stress exert significant influences on the seepage characteristics. Therefore, when reducing water inrush hazards by gangue backfilling in gobs, the particle size distribution should be optimized by combining the stress and water pressure conditions. Seepage channels in gangue backfill materials vary with changes in the particle size and stress. Their variation can be divided into four stages: shrinkage of seepage channels, reconstruction of seepage channels, dynamic equilibrium between slight expansion and shrinkage, and persistence of the impervious effect. After the first and second stages have been fully developed, the preliminary impervious conditions are met; after full development of the fourth stage, the gangue backfill materials reach an impervious state.

RESUMO

Coal mining-induced groundwater losses may trigger water inrush disasters and surface ecological degradation. The compaction and seepage characteristics of broken rock in gobs can be used to find the balance point of water inrush prevention and water resource protection in shallow coal seam groups. These characteristics, as well as geological and engineering parameters of shallow coal seam mining, are experimentally determined in this study. The performed permeability tests revealed that the percentage of voids in broken rock exponentially decreased with the axial stress. The water seepage of broken rock in the compaction process conformed to the Forchheimer theory, with the permeability ranging from 10-1 to 10 D. The initial value and reduction range of mudstone permeability in the three lithologic samples were the smallest. The uniaxial compression strength reduction caused by the increase in unit mass water due to water saturation of natural rock samples were 5.8 and 3.2 % for coal and sandstone, respectively. Based on the experimental results on compaction and seepage of broken rock, the axial stress-percentage of voids-permeability model considering compaction and re-crushing was established. The mudstone roof was found to be the key rock stratum during re-mining for ecological protection and hydraulic connection evaluation of the overburden.

RESUMO

This study aimed to experimentally understand the seepage mechanism in levees and evaluate the applicability of an optical-fiber distributed temperature system based on Raman-scattered light as a levee stability monitoring method. To this end, a concrete box capable of accommodating two levees was built, and experiments were conducted by supplying water evenly to both levees through a system equipped with a butterfly valve. Water-level and water-pressure changes were monitored every minute using 14 pressure sensors, while temperature changes were monitored using distributed optical-fiber cables. Levee 1, composed of thicker particles, experienced a faster water pressure change, and a corresponding temperature change was observed due to seepage. While the temperature change inside the levees was relatively smaller than external temperature changes, measurement fluctuations were significant. Additionally, the influence of external temperature and the dependence of temperature measurements on the levee position made intuitive interpretation challenging. Therefore, five smoothing techniques with different time intervals were examined and compared to determine their effectiveness in reducing outliers, elucidating temperature change trends and enabling the comparison of temperature changes at different positions. Overall, this study confirmed that the optical-fiber distributed temperature system combined with appropriate data-processing techniques can be more efficient than existing methods for understanding and monitoring levee seepage.

RESUMO

Amphibians are more threatened than any other vertebrate class, yet evidence for many threats is missing. The Cape lowland fynbos (endemic scrub biome) is threatened by habitat loss, and natural temporary freshwater habitats are removed in favour of permanent impoundments. In this study, we determine amphibian assemblages across different freshwater habitat types with special attention to the presence of invasive fish. We find that anuran communities differ primarily by habitat type, with permanent water habitats having more widespread taxa, while temporary water bodies have more range restricted taxa. Invasive fish are found to have a significant impact on frogs with toads most tolerant of their presence. Temporary freshwater habitats are a conservation priority in the area, and their amphibian assemblages represent endemic taxa that are intolerant of invasive fish. Conservation of a biodiverse amphibian assemblage in lowland fynbos areas will rely on the creation of temporary freshwater habitats, rather than a northern hemisphere pond based solution.

RESUMO

Hydraulic structures are typically subjected to long-term hydraulic loading, and concrete-the main material of structures-may suffer from cracking damage and seepage failure, which can threaten the safety of hydraulic structures. In order to assess the safety of hydraulic concrete structures and realize the accurate analysis of the whole failure process of hydraulic concrete structures under the coupling effect of seepage and stress, it is vital to comprehend the variation law of concrete permeability coefficients under complex stress states. In this paper, several concrete samples were prepared, designed for loading conditions of confining pressures and seepage pressures in the first stage, and axial pressures in the later stage, to carry out the permeability experiment of concrete materials under multi-axial loading, followed by the relationships between the permeability coefficients and axial strain, and the confining and seepage pressures were revealed accordingly. In addition, during the application of axial pressure, the whole process of seepage-stress coupling was divided into four stages, describing the permeability variation law of each stage and analyzing the causes of its formation. The exponential relationship between the permeability coefficient and volume strain was established, which can serve as a scientific basis for the determination of permeability coefficients in the analysis of the whole failure process of concrete seepage-stress coupling. Finally, this relationship formula was applied to numerical simulation to verify the applicability of the above experimental results in the numerical simulation analysis of concrete seepage-stress coupling.

RESUMO

Water seepage-induced geological hazards (SIGHs), including landslides, collapse, debris flow, and ground fissures, often cause substantial human mortality, economic losses, and environmental damage. However, an early warning of geological water seepage remains a significant challenge. A self-powered, cost-effective, reliable, and susceptible SIGH early warning system (SIGH-EWS) is reported herein. This system designed the all-solid, sustainable, fire retardant, and safe-to-use bio-ionotronic batteries to provide a stable power supply for Internet of Things chipsets. Furthermore, the batteries' outstanding humidity and water sensitivity allow sensing of the water seepage emergence. Integrating energy management and wireless communication systems, the SIGH-EWS realizes timely alerts for early water seepage in different water and soil environments with a time resolution in seconds. Based on these merits, the SIGH-EWS demonstrates promising application prospects for early warning of geological disasters and corresponding design strategies that can potentially guide the designs of next-generation geological hazard alarm systems.

RESUMO

Flood-controlled ancient dikes play a significant role in flood control and have received widespread attention as historical and cultural symbols. Flood-controlled ancient dikes often undergo disasters, and research on their repair is receiving increasing attention from experts and scholars. This article studies the control of seepage and bank slope instability in flood-controlled ancient dikes. Starting from the repair of ancient dike materials, three types of work are carried out: a test of soil's mechanical properties, finite element numerical simulation, and repair technology research. The research results show that the soil of the ancient dike site has hardened after being contaminated with waste oil from catering. The strength index of the ancient dike soil decreases and shows brittleness when the water content is 15% and the oil content exceeds 6%. The strength index and permeability coefficient of oil-contaminated soil improved using modified lime mortar (MLM), which was achieved using the method of MLM to repair oil contaminated soil. When the MLM content was 10% and the oil content was 6%, the friction angle of the soil sample reached its maximum value. When the MLM content was the same, the higher the density of the soil sample, the greater the friction angle and cohesion and the smaller the permeability coefficient. Establishing a finite element numerical model, through comparative analysis, it was found that after MLM remediation of oil-contaminated soil, the extreme hydraulic gradient of the ancient dike decreased by 31.3%, and the extreme safety factor of the bank slope stability increased by 31.2%. MLM pressure grouting technology was used to improve the soil during the remediation of contaminated soil at the ancient dike site. Through on-site drilling inspection, the effective diffusion radius of MLM grouting was obtained, and the plane layout and grouting depth of MLM pressure grouting were determined. The on-site water injection permeability test showed that using MLM pressure grouting technology can effectively repair oil-contaminated soil in the ancient dike while reducing the permeability coefficient by 8-15%.

RESUMO

The developed karst caves may become the seepage channels of heavy metal to the soil and underground water in Southwest China. Therefore, it is necessary to apply effective seepage treatments to the base of heavy metal tailing reservoirs. This paper addressed the high-pressure rotary jet technology and slurry systems used in the seepage treatment of the deep tailing sand of the Shenxiandong tailing pond located in Southwest China. In this study, the factors of fluidity, initial and final setting times, compressive strength, and permeability coefficient of the slurry were conducted. The mechanism analysis was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Three different types of slurry systems were proposed, and the permeability coefficients of the solidification body following 28 days of curing were less than 1 × 10-7 cm/s. The concentrations of Pb and Zn in the slurry system containing bentonite were reduced by 26.2% and 45.7%, respectively. In the presence of slaked lime and fly ash, the concentrations of Pb and Zn could be reduced by 26.8% and 30%, respectively. A total of 2142 high-pressure rotary jet piles were completed by the high-pressure rotary jet method in the field trial. The diffusion radius of these piles was over 1 m. Following 28 days of curing, the solidification body's compressive strength was 7.45 MPa and the permeability coefficient was 6.27 × 10-8 cm/s. Both the laboratory and on-site trials showed that this method produced a good pollution barrier effect, which could prevent the diffusion of heavy metal into the adjacent underground water through the karst caves. It is also an effective way of engineering technology concerning heavy metal pollution control that occurs in tailing ponds.

RESUMO

Earth dams or embankments are susceptible to instability due to internal seepage, piping, and erosion, which can lead to catastrophic failure. Therefore, monitoring the seepage water level before the dam collapses is an important task for early warning of dam failure. Currently, there are hardly any monitoring methods that use wireless underground transmission to monitor the water content inside earth dams. Real-time monitoring of changes in the soil moisture content can more directly determine the water level of seepage. Wireless transmission of sensors buried underground requires signal transmission through the soil medium, which is more complex than traditional air transmission. Henceforth, this study establishes a wireless underground transmission sensor that overcomes the distance limitation of underground transmission through a hop network. A series of feasibility tests were conducted on the wireless underground transmission sensor, including peer-to-peer transmission tests, multi-hop underground transmission tests, power management tests, and soil moisture measurement tests. Finally, field seepage tests were conducted to apply wireless underground transmission sensors to monitor the internal seepage water level before an earth dam failure. The findings show that wireless underground transmission sensors can achieve the monitoring of seepage water levels inside earth dams. In addition, the results supersede those of a conventional water level gauge. This could be crucial in early warning systems during the era of climate change, which has caused unprecedented flooding events.

RESUMO

Fluid penetration into the rock during hydraulic fracturing has been an essential issue in studying the mechanism of fracture initiation, especially the seepage force caused by fluid penetration, which has an important effect on the fracture initiation mechanism around a wellbore. However, in previous studies, the effect of seepage force under unsteady seepage on the fracture initiation mechanism was not considered. In this study, a new seepage model that can predict the variations of pore pressure and seepage force with time around a vertical wellbore for hydraulic fracturing was established by using the method of separation of variables and the Bessel function theory. Then, based on the proposed seepage model, a new circumferential stress calculation model considering the time-dependent effect of seepage force was established. The accuracy and applicability of the seepage model and the mechanical model were verified by comparison with numerical, analytical and experimental results. The time-dependent effect of seepage force on fracture initiation under unsteady seepage was analyzed and discussed. The results show that when the wellbore pressure is constant, the circumferential stress induced by seepage force increases over time, and the possibility of fracture initiation also increases. The higher the hydraulic conductivity, the lower the fluid viscosity and the shorter the time required for tensile failure during hydraulic fracturing. In particular, when the tensile strength of rock is lower, the fracture initiation may occur within the rock mass rather than on the wellbore wall. This study is promising to provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for further research on fracture initiation in the future.

RESUMO

A seepage model based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) was developed for the seepage simulation of pore water in porous rock mass media. Then, the effectiveness of the seepage model was proved by a two-dimensional seepage benchmark example. Under the framework of SPH based on the total Lagrangian formula, an extended hydro-mechanical coupling model (EHM-TLF-SPH) was proposed to simulate the crack propagation and coalescence process of rock samples with prefabricated flaws under hydraulic and compressive loads. In the SPH program, the Lagrangian kernel was used to approximate the equations of motion of particles. Then, the influence of flaw water pressure on crack propagation and coalescence models of rock samples with single or two parallel prefabricated flaws was studied by two numerical examples. The simulation results agreed well with the test results, verifying the validity and accuracy of the EHM-TLF-SPH model. The results showed that with the increase in flaw water pressure, the crack initiation angle and stress of the wing crack decreased gradually. The crack initiation location of the wing crack moved to the prefabricated flaw tip, while the crack initiation location of the shear crack was far away from the prefabricated flaw tip. In addition, the influence of the permeability coefficient and flaw water pressure on the osmotic pressure was also investigated, which revealed the fracturing mechanism of hydraulic cracking engineering.
